Kot je z miski - kontrola masy ciała, Multivet Active

Overweight and obesity are among the most common - and most underestimated - health problems in dogs and cats. Excess weight shortens a pet's life and worsens many conditions, from the joints to the heart. The good news is that it is a problem you can tackle effectively. We explain how to recognise overweight and how rehabilitation helps.

How to recognise overweight in a pet?

Body condition scoring (BCS) helps. In an animal of correct weight you should be able to feel the ribs easily under a thin layer of tissue and, viewed from above, see a "waist" behind the ribcage. If the ribs are hard to feel, the waist disappears and fat is deposited on the belly or back, you are most likely dealing with overweight. When in doubt, ask a vet to assess it during a visit.

Why is overweight dangerous?

Extra kilograms are not about looks but health. Overweight overloads the joints and worsens degenerative disease, increases the risk of diabetes, burdens the heart and respiratory system, makes recovery after surgery harder and raises peri-operative risk. Obese animals also tire more quickly and are reluctant to move, which fuels the vicious circle of weight gain.

Why is it so hard to lose weight?

An obese animal finds it hard to move because movement is uncomfortable - and without movement the weight keeps rising. Overfeeding, too many treats and an inactive lifestyle add to this. Breaking the cycle requires two things: an appropriate diet and safe, well-chosen physical activity.

The role of activity and the water treadmill

This is where the water treadmill helps - one of the safest forms of exercise for animals with overweight. Water buoyancy offloads the overloaded joints, so the dog can exercise without pain, burn calories and build muscle. The training is controlled and graded, so effort can be increased safely.

A safe pace of slimming

Weight reduction should be slow and supervised - too rapid slimming can be dangerous, especially in cats. It is best to set the diet plan with a vet and introduce activity gradually. Regular weighing helps maintain motivation.
