Home exercises that support a dog’s rehabilitation

Home exercises that support a dog’s rehabilitation - Multivet Active Wrocław

Work in the clinic is only part of rehabilitation - what happens at home matters just as much. Well-performed home exercises consolidate the results of therapy, speed the return to fitness and help maintain a pet's condition day to day. We explain how to do it safely and effectively.

Why are home exercises so important?

Visits to the physiotherapist usually take place once or a few times a week, while the dog's body works and learns new movement patterns every day. Regular, short exercises at home mean that progress does not "slip away" between visits and that therapy brings more lasting results. It is also a way to actively involve the owner, who knows their dog best.

Safety rules

Home exercises should always follow a plan agreed with the physiotherapist - what helps one patient may harm another. We work on an anti-slip surface, without haste and always within the dog's comfort. Pain, clear fatigue or reluctance is a signal to stop. It is better to do fewer repetitions well than more badly.

A warm-up is the basis

Before the main exercises it is worth warming the dog up with a few minutes of calm walking. Warm muscles and joints work better and are less prone to injury. We also finish gently, giving the dog a moment to wind down.

Examples of safe exercises

The most commonly recommended include controlled sit-to-stand transitions (strengthening the hind legs), calm walking up a gentle slope, slowly stepping over low obstacles and walking on different surfaces to stimulate sensation. The specific set is always chosen by the physiotherapist to match the problem and stage of therapy - the above are only examples, not a ready plan.

How often to exercise?

In rehabilitation, short and frequent sessions work better than rare, long ones. A few minutes several times a day is usually more effective and less demanding than one long "workout". The exact frequency is set by the physiotherapist and adjusted to the dog's response.

The physiotherapist's role

Home exercises are a complement, not a replacement for professional therapy. During visits the physiotherapist assesses progress, corrects technique and modifies the plan, and introduces methods not available at home, such as the water treadmill or manual therapy.
